Why Summer Makes Some Entrepreneurs Restless

June 23, 20266 min read

There's a specific kind of restlessness that arrives right alongside the summer. It's not exactly wanting to shut down and go on vacation - though that's part of it - but it's deeper and for entrepreneurs and small business owners, as that energy shifts your attention starts to pull in multiple directions. Your regular day-to-day feels more oppressive and the beautiful weather starts feeling like a personal betrayal - how dare it be gorgeous when you have work to do!?

If you're experiencing this right now, there is literally nothing “wrong” and you’re not being “lazy”, you’re being a human aware of their energy and in entrepreneurship, that’s a major asset!

But we also understand the frustration, and maybe a touch of guilt, that comes with this summertime restlessness. So let’s talk about it.

You Can Relax, Your Body Is Just Responding Like A Human Should

Let's start with a bit of biology - longer days mean your circadian rhythm shifts and more sunlight changes your hormone production. Your body is literally wired to operate differently in summer than it does in winter so locking in and working at your normal pace isn’t about willpower. Your nervous system is simply responding to environmental cues that have shaped human behavior for millennia! And who are we to fight biology?!

Also, summer, historically, meant a different kind of work. More activity, different activity, seasonal activity and our ancestors weren't sitting at desks in June. They were outside doing whatever needed to be done seasonally and that blueprint is still in our bodies, even if your actual work bears no resemblance to that ancestral summer pattern.

The Small Business Burnout That’s Been Building

Here's an entrepreneur truth that a lot of us tend to ignore: By June, we are running on fumes.

The year always starts with momentum and fresh starts. By March we’re still chugging along and feeling productive. May starts to get a little energetically dicey and now, in June, our bodies, brains and nervous systems are like, “Yea I’m done, we need something different”.

And we don’t really notice this accumulating fatigue. It builds quietly in the background and when the conditions change and the weather warms and the days are longer, we’re hit with a burnout that can take us by surprise.

If you've been running hard for six months straight, summer's invitation to do something different isn't a distraction, it’s your body trying to signal something.

So how can we listen and honor but not abandon the business we love?

We Listen & Honor And We Don’t Abandon Our Business

The answer to that question above isn't "push through" and it isn't "abandon your business for the summer", it's somewhere in the middle. And it also requires getting really honest about what you actually need.

First, we name what's happening.
You're not lazy, you're not losing your competitive edge, and you're definitely not failing. You’re just experiencing a sort of accumulated fatigue alongside a very normal seasonal energy shift! That’s all and it doesn’t have to be so serious.

Second, stop treating June like January.
Let’s just acknowledge what this season means for our bodies, our brains, and our lives and stop expecting January behavior on a gorgeous June day.

You wouldn't expect your body to need the same amount of food, sleep, or activity as it does in winter so why are you expecting your business to operate on the exact same rhythm?

Now this doesn't mean we shut everything down until Labor Day, it means you get intentional about what actually needs your daily attention versus what can shift, pause, or operate differently during these months.

Third, look at what's truly draining you.
The restlessness you’re feeling is pointing at something, so let’s pay some attention to that information.

  • Is it the specific clients you're serving right now that’s draining you?

  • Does your business structure support you or are you supporting it?

  • Have you committed to a pace & rhythm that’s not currently sustainable?

  • What have you said ‘yes’ to that you’re now regretting?

When we get to these seasons of restlessness, it’s time to take inventory and then plan accordingly. Listen to what’s coming up and what actually needs to change.

Fourth, get strategic with the info we've gathered.
Ok, we have acknowledged, honored, and gathered some info so now we do some work.

Can you consolidate your client schedule into fewer days so you have larger blocks free?

Can you pause certain initiatives or launches until fall?

Can you batch your content creation so it's done in focused bursts rather than daily?

Can you adjust your availability so you're working in a way that feels more sustainable right now?

And these aren't permanent changes - lots of businesses have seasonal hours for a reason! You aren’t abandoning anything, you’re simply honoring both your business AND the reality that you're a human living in a season that you want to enjoy in a different way.

Fifth, protect what matters most.
We know that not everything in your business can shift - you have clients counting on you, you have revenue goals, you have commitments - but the question is:

What are the non-negotiables in your business and what has some flexibility for temporary change?

Once you know that, you can get creative about how to honor both.

The goal in all of this isn't to choose between your business and enjoying summer, it's to know you can shift your day-to-day so that summer can work for both of you!

This might look like…

  • Your core client work happens but looks different. Fewer sessions, different timing, whatever adjustment keeps you showing up without burning out.

  • Your marketing or content might shift. Maybe you're not launching anything new in July. Maybe you're batching content in June so July is lighter. Maybe you're being more transparent with your audience about your summer pace.

  • Your income goals might adjust slightly. Not zero, but realistic about the pace you're actually capable of sustaining right now.

  • Your boundaries get clearer. Summer is the perfect time to practice saying no to things that don't align or things that pull you in directions you don't want to go.

Make This Summer Your Business Partner, Not Your Downfall

Your summer restlessness isn't a problem to overcome, it's just information about what you need right now. And the best part in all of this is that as a small business owner, you get to decide for yourself how you’re going to meet those needs!

Some of what summer is surfacing might be temporary and some might be permanent signals that something needs to change in how you've structured your business or your life. So instead of using summer as some kind of business road bump, take the time to notice, acknowledge, and then use that information to move forward with intention and strategy.
