You opened your email this morning and saw another success story. You scrolled through your feed and saw another entrepreneur in your industry just hit six figures. Someone else launched a podcast, got thousands of downloads and someone else is blowing up on TikTok.
And right now, you’re not. So you start thinking: Maybe I need to be doing what they’re doing.
This is the trend trap - and it's costing you more than you realize.
Every single week there's a new "must-have" for your business - a TikTok trend, Instagram Reels, podcasts, newsletters, communities, AI tools, new software, masterminds, challenges, summits, webinars….and we could go on.
Everyone seems to be doing it all so it must all be essential, right?
Nope. Not even a little bit. And the moment you stop believing that, your business (and your mindset) changes.
The problem at the root of all of this is comparison. You see what someone else is doing and assume you need to do it too. You see the algorithm rewarding early adopters so you jump in and tell yourself it’s necessary. You build your strategy around what everyone else is doing instead of what actually works for your and your business.
And now you're stretched thin across ten platforms doing nothing really well, managing subscriptions you don't use, and constantly learning new tools that drain your time and energy.
Let's talk about what this actually costs you.
Time
You spend hours learning new platforms, creating content in different formats, and managing accounts that you're not even sure are working. That's time you could spend on actual client work, strategic planning, or high quality marketing.
Money
All of those subscription costs add up. Software costs money, tools cost money and honestly, you're probably paying for things you’re only dabbling in. That's revenue leaving your business for no real return.
Mental Energy
Context-switching between platforms burns you out and when your brain can't stay focused or hone in on just a few things, the overall quality of everything suffers. On top of that, you get tired, your brain gets tired and before you know it you’re resenting all these obligations and racing toward burnout.
But it’s the opportunity cost that can really be the killer for a small business. While you're spreading yourself across everything, you're not going deep on what actually works. You're not building real community on one platform, you're not mastering a single strategy, you're just... busy keeping it.
And what are you missing with all that “busy”?
We’re going to ask you to pause and ask yourself a very important question:
"Does this thing truly serve my actual business?"
Check in:
Does it align with my business goals?
Does it reach the people I'm trying to reach?
Do I have time and energy for this, or will it pull me away from work that matters?
Will this move the needle on what I'm actually trying to build or will it just keep me busy?
Taking the time to decide whether something is worth the time, money, & mental energy is going to save you a lot of time, money, & mental energy in the end.
Here's the thing about all of those people seemingly doing it all: They’re not.
Or at the very least, they’re not doing it alone.
Your competitors and contemporaries are either doing exactly what we’ve been talking about - trying to be everywhere, all the time, and burning out - or they have a team behind them that’s taking all of the management off their plates.
So unless you have one of those teams, we want to challenge you to differentiate yourself by being so intentionally focused on the thing that you CAN manage well.
What if you chose one platform and dominated it?
What if you picked one content format and became incredible at it?
What if you said no to trends and stayed consistent instead?
What if you specialized while everyone else generalized?
And that’s how you start to stand out. The entrepreneur who shows up consistently on one platform with genuine, thoughtful content beats the one who's everywhere doing everything half-heartedly - every time.
If you’ve been reading this thinking, “Shoot, I’m already drowning in stuff”, then use the next few steps to start parring down what’s simply not working.
What platforms are you on where your clients don't actually hang out? Cut them.
What tools have you been "meaning to use" for six months? Cancel the subscription.
What content formats feel like pure obligation? Stop doing them.
What trends did you jump on out of FOMO? You can let those go.
Overall, what would you drop in a heartbeat if someone gave you the permission to drop it?
(This is your permission, by the way, drop it)
In the decade that we’ve been running a business and helping other small business owners run theirs, we know that what you actually need to build and scale a business is a whole lot simpler than the internet and social media portray.
1. One or two platforms where your clients are and where you can consistently, and with genuine value, show up.
2. Tools that genuinely solve a real problem in your business. Think automation software, bookkeeping products - the things that take tasks OFF your plate, not add to it.
3. Strategies you have time and energy for. This one may take some time to figure out but the more honest you are with yourself, the quicker you’ll get there.
Everything else? We give you full permission to let them go.
The businesses that not just scale but last for years aren't the ones chasing every trend, using every new tool, and showing up everywhere. They're the ones that figured out what matters the most to their audience, their clients, and themselves and they commit to that.
Your business doesn't need to look like someone else's and you don’t need to operate like them either. Stop trying to do everything and decide what actually matters for your specific business with your specific clients and your specific life.
And if you’re ready for the kind of small business support that puts YOU ahead of any trend, the team at Automation On A Mission is here to help! With our all-in-one, fully customizable system, we meet you where you are and help grow your business from a place of genuine intention, not some internet trend.
