There’s a moment in the journey of every small business owner when something starts to feel a bit off.
Maybe it’s hard to pinpoint or articulate but you know it’s there. You’re still working hard, still showing up, still checking all the boxes, but that spark you once had isn't burning as brightly - or maybe it’s starting to be snuffed out altogether.
If that’s where you are right now, I’m glad you’ve landed here.
Please know that you’re not broken, and your business isn’t failing. You may simply be at an entrepreneurial crossroads and your next level requires something different from you.
Call it a pivot, call it a re-alignment but whatever it is, it isn’t a setback. It’s a signal. It’s your business telling you it’s time to evolve.
Before you can make whatever pivot is necessary in your business, you have to recognize and understand when something’s no longer aligned.
Here are a few common signs:
You dread the work that once made you excited.
You feel like you’re forcing growth instead of flowing with it.
Your values or vision have evolved, but your offers haven’t kept up.
You’re attracting clients who no longer feel like the right fit.
You’ve lost clarity around your “why.”
If you read any of those and said, “Oh, that’s me!”, you’re on your way to clarity and important feedback for your next move. Misalignment isn’t the end; it’s an opportunity to reexamine what you truly want from your business.
Before you make any big decisions or major pivots, stop and ask yourself: What’s really changed?
Have your goals or priorities shifted since you started your business? How and why?
Are you still solving a problem you care about? Or has something else come up that’s pulling your passion and attention?
Do your current offers feel exciting & doable or have they become heavy & no longer enjoyable?
Is your business model working for your current season of life? Or does it feel like pushing upstream everyday?
Sometimes what feels like burnout or frustration is actually a clear symptom of growth. You’ve learned, you’ve evolved, and now your business needs to catch up.
Getting honest about why you’re feeling misaligned will help direct your pivot with clarity instead of panic.
Ok, just because you know it’s time to pivot does not mean you’re going to burn it all down and start again. Some of the most powerful business shifts are small, intentional adjustments that simply course correct instead of finding a whole new map.
A strategic pivot might look like:
- Refining your offers and products to focus on your most profitable or fulfilling services.
- Adjusting your target audience to better match your values, expertise and desired offers.
- Reworking your pricing to reflect your time, energy, and experience.
An emotional pivot comes from intuition:
Is your gut telling you that something just isn’t right? That’s valid too! Your sweet spot will be when instinct meets intention.
Ask yourself:
“What’s one small shift I can make today that brings me closer to alignment?”
Maybe it’s pulling back on your content creation or changing your office hours to give you more mental and emotional space. Wherever you land, be sure to listen and trust that your gut is trying to lead you toward more ease.
That’s how lasting change begins—one intentional step at a time.
Once you’ve done some self inventory and you’re clear that a pivot is needed, start small and strategic:
1. Reconnect with your overall vision.
Write down what success looks like for you now, not when you first started. Think about the time, experience, and success you’ve had thus far and use that to inform what you want this next version to be
2. Talk to trusted peers or mentors.
Community is so important for small business owners and in times of transition, having an outside perspective can help make your pivot easier.
3. Test before you leap.
Instead of deleting it all and creating something brand new, try out a beta program, a limited offer, or new messaging before making the full transition.
4. Communicate with your audience.
Transparency builds trust so if you’re in a business pivot, bring your clients and followers along for the journey! Talk about your ‘why’, about how you are going to serve them more authentically and how they join you in this next phase.
Change takes courage, no matter what.
And when it comes to pivoting in your small business, it requires you to let go of what’s familiar, maybe what’s comfortable and step into something new.
That’s not always easy but here’s what’s true - you’re not starting over. You’re making a change with insight, strategy and intention.
Every past version of your business taught you something valuable. Those lessons form the foundation for what comes next.
If you’re feeling the pull to pivot, trust that it’s not the end of your business. It’s the beginning of the next chapter.
