7 Strategies for Mastering Work-Life Balance As An Entrepreneur

May 20, 20244 min read

Work-life balance - the goal of probably every entrepreneur out there. We build our own businesses so we can decide for ourselves how we run the day-to-day but often we end up falling victim to the toughest boss ever - ourselves! It can be tough being the one in charge of it all, especially our own busy brains and lives.

For small business owners and solopreneurs, the lines between personal and professional life can easily blur, leading to burnout and less than stellar productivity.

But is it even possible to balance all the things - work, life, self?

We think so!

Let’s look at 7 simple ways to start truly finding that work-life balance as an entrepreneur!

work life balance

1. Set Clear Boundaries (and stick to them!)

Part of running your own business and knowing where your boundaries are - both personally and professionally - and being able to enforce them.

  • Set your specific work hours and stick to them. Communicate these hours clearly to your clients and team.

  • If possible, physically separate your work area from your personal spaces. This is especially important if you work from home.

2. Realistically Prioritize Your Tasks

Knowing what needs to get done and when is a major part of running your own business! Take time at the end of each week and the end of each month to look at upcoming tasks and decide which are your top must-dos.

  • Identify your top three priorities that need to be accomplished for each month, week and day. Then break down the action steps for each task.

  • Organize lesser tasks in order of importance.

  • Use tools and methods to categorize tasks by urgency and importance, focusing on what truly moves the needle.

3. Delegate Effectively

Part of being an entrepreneur is knowing when and where offloading is most beneficial for you. Being able to delegate tasks will make it easier for you to find that work-life balance.

  • Identify tasks that can be delegated to others, whether it’s hiring a virtual assistant or using automated tools for routine tasks.

  • Invest time in training team members or finding the right freelancers so you can feel confident passing off important jobs.

4. Utilize Technology For Better Balance

We live in an age when there is an almost endless amount of choices for tech that helps you run your business. When working towards your best work-life balance, take advantage of technology that automates and tasks tasks off your plate.

  • Use productivity tools like Asana, Trello, or Slack to streamline your workflows and communication.

  • Explore automation tools, like Automation On A Mission, that can take over repetitive tasks, such as scheduling social media posts or managing your email marketing.

5. Schedule Your Downtime (and don’t cancel on yourself!)

There’s a lot to do all the time, we get it! So just like putting meetings, projects and content on a calendar, schedule your downtime too!

  • Block out time in your calendar for breaks throughout the day and stick to this schedule.

  • Plan regular vacations, or staycations where work is strictly off-limits.

  • Treat your downtime as sacred and truly disconnect!

6. Prioritize Your Mental & Physical Health

When you are the head, heart and body of your business, it’s crucial to treat yourself as your most important asset.

  • Make physical activity a regular part of your daily and weekly routine. Treat them as appointments and don’t cancel on yourself!

  • Find a practice - mindfulness, meditation, therapy - to help you manage stress and create healthy coping methods.

7. Regularly (and honestly) Assess Your Work-Life Balance

It’s easy, and very common, to believe we are doing a better job balancing it all than we actually are.

Take some time every few weeks, maybe as part of your end-of-month task prioritization, to look back and see just how well you were able to maintain a work-life balance.

  • Set a monthly or quarterly review appointment with yourself to see how well you’ve been balancing it all.

  • Take an honest look at what you did, what you didn’t do and what you want to do better and make adjustments based on that.

Remember, achieving that work-life balance is an ongoing process that requires continuous effort, assessment and adjustment. Start small, stay consistent and you will see significant improvements in both your work and life!
