It’s something we see all the time with small businesses - you're spending time and energy on lead generation tactics that aren't actually working for you and you know it! You know it’s not working but you stick to it because you think simply staying consistent will solve the problem of lead generation.
But all that consistency with no results is costing you more than just time.
Most business owners approach lead generation and marketing like it's a checklist. They look at what everyone else is doing—webinars, social media, email marketing, networking events, content marketing—and they try to do all of it. Or at least enough of it to feel like they're "doing lead gen."
But the problem isn't lead generation itself. The problem might be that you're trying to generate leads using tactics that don't fit your business, your audience, or the way you actually work.
Before you add one more lead generation tactic to your plate, you need to do something basic but incredibly important: Get strategic about what actually works for you.
This means you're going to say ‘no’ to most things. You're going to look at the comprehensive list of lead generation strategies and choose maybe two or three that actually make sense for you, your business, and the audience you’re trying to reach.
This is the part most people skip because they want to jump straight to tactics without understanding whether those tactics are actually aligned with anything.
We promise, don’t skip this part.
You need to know three things before you choose a single lead generation tactic.
First: What's actually working now?
Look at where your current clients come from. Did they find you through referrals? Did they see your email newsletter? Did they discover you on a podcast? Did they meet you at a networking event?
The answer to this question should guide everything else. Your best lead generation source is probably already in front of you, but you're not paying attention to it because it doesn't feel "trendy."
Second: Where is your ideal client actually spending time?
Not where you think they should be coming from or where someone told they’d come from, where they’re actually.
Are they on LinkedIn? Are they in Facebook groups? Are they reading blogs? Are they on Instagram? Are you meeting them at networking events or through referrals?
If your ideal client is on LinkedIn and you're spending all your time on TikTok, you're wasting precious time and energy. It's that simple.
Third: What can you actually sustain?
This is honestly the most important question, in our opinion. Some lead generation tactics require ongoing, consistent effort. Some require upfront investment and a lot require skills you don't have.
If a tactic requires something you don't have—time, money, expertise, or energy—it's not a tactic for you - at least not right now - so don’t put that on the top of your priority list.
Once you know where your clients come from, where they spend time, and what you can actually maintain, you can choose strategically.
Maybe your tactic is email marketing because your audience checks email and you already have a list.
Maybe it's referral generation because your best clients come through word of mouth anyway.
Maybe it's content marketing because you're naturally good at teaching.
Maybe it's speaking or networking because you enjoy being in front of people.
Maybe it's one specific platform where your audience actually is.
Here's the key: You're choosing based on strategy, not based on what you think you should do.
This is where most people get stuck. They feel like they should be doing webinars and be on all the socials and be networking more. But "should" doesn't create results, strategic alignment creates results.
Once you've identified your lead generation strategy, you need to ask: Can I actually do this well?
If you choose email marketing but you hate writing emails, that's not a sustainable option. If you choose content marketing but you don't enjoy creating content, that's not a sustainable option. If you choose networking but you're an introvert who gets drained by constant social interaction, that’s not a sustainable option.
This is where outsourcing or delegation comes in. If your lead generation strategy requires something you can't do well or sustain, but you do want to make it work, you have options. You can hire someone to manage it, you can use automation to make it easier, you can delegate parts of it. Or you can choose a different strategy.
But you can't force yourself to do something you hate indefinitely because that energy shows up in your results and you won’t be able to stick to it.
You can't know if your lead generation is working unless you actually measure it, but you don't need to measure everything. You need to measure what matters for YOUR strategy.
If your lead generation is referrals, measure how many referrals you're getting.
If it's email, measure open rates and conversion rates.
If it's content, measure traffic and engagement.
Track the specific metrics for the specific tactics you chose, then—and this is important—adjust based on what you learn. If something isn't working, you have two choices: Fix it or stop doing it. Don't just keep doing it hoping it gets better someday.
Most of your competition is trying to do everything - they're on every platform, they're trying every tactic and they're spread thin and getting mediocre results.
So when you decide to be strategic, listen to your own data, and choose what actually works and go deep, that's how you win at lead generation. Not by doing more, by doing what actually works and doing it well.
This week, answer these three questions:
Where do your current clients actually come from?
Look at your last 10 clients and track how they found you. That's your data.
Where does your ideal client spend time?
Not where they should be but where are they actually?
What can you sustain?
What lead generation tactics fit your skills, your schedule, and your energy and you know you can stick to them, start there.
Once you have those answers, choose one or two tactics that align with all three and get to generating high quality, totally aligned leads.
