You might be doing what so many other small business owners are also doing - trying to serve and speak to everyone hoping that by casting a wide net you’ll be able to reel all the fish. But what actually happens when you go broad with your message is that you end up sorting through a whole lot of junk to pull out the quality fish you were looking for.
And then you end up being a generalist because you're trying to help anyone who has a problem you can solve, instead of honing in on the specific people whose specific problem you solve.
And it's costing you more than you realize.
Here's what most people get wrong: They think being specific about who they serve is limiting their reach and possible business opportunities.
But specificity isn't a limitation. It's your competitive advantage and learning this changes everything about how you build your business.
Let’s look at what is usually behind this hesitation: You're afraid that if you say "my ideal client is X," you'll miss out on clients who are Y or Z. You’re afraid that being specific means turning away work and in a competitive market, you can't afford to be picky.
But what happens when you try to serve everyone is your message becomes nobody's message. You're trying to speak to entrepreneurs AND corporate teams AND nonprofits AND solo practitioners, so you end up speaking to none of them clearly.
Your marketing and messaging becomes generic, your positioning becomes unclear and you and your business become forgettable.
And the clients you do end up attracting are a mixed bag of good fits and totally unaligned ones. Some drain more energy than they generate revenue and you spend your time managing mismatched relationships instead of delivering great work for the right people.
When you get clear about who your ideal client is—not just their industry or income level, but their values, their communication style, their commitment level, their capacity to implement what you teach—a whole lot starts to shift for the better.
Your messaging becomes targeted.
Instead of trying to appeal to everyone, you're speaking directly to the person who most needs what you offer. People in your ideal client category recognize themselves and they think, "Oh, this is for me!"
Your sales conversations become easier.
You're not trying to figure out if someone's a fit, you already know they are, so these conversations become a confirmation chat instead of a sales one.
Your results get better.
You're not trying to serve incompatible needs and you're working with people who think like you, value what you value, and can actually implement what you teach. They get better results, they're happier, and then they refer other people like them.
Your energy is protected.
You actually like the clients you're working with instead of dreading the work. That might sound like a soft benefit, but in the big picture of life and work, your protected energy serves as the foundation of everything you do.
The best place to start when looking to get crystal clear on your messaging and stop talking to everyone is at your current business. Use where you are and where you’ve been to collect clarifying data.
Start with your best clients - the ones you genuinely enjoyed working with - and look for patterns. What do they have in common? Same industry? Same mindset or commitment level? Same specific starting point or desired outcome?
What's different about them compared to your other clients? The clients who were harder to work with or didn't get the results you wanted, what was different about them?
What or who would you actually want to say no to going forward? If you could turn away one type of client and never work with them again, who would it be?
This kind of clarity is marketing gold because once you know who you want to work with, you can reverse-engineer everything else. Your messaging speaks to them, your screening process filters for them, your pricing reflects working with them, and your content addresses their specific situation.
But what about the money!? Won't you make less if you turn people away!?
Nope and here's the math most people don't calculate:
One wrong-fit client might pay you X amount but cost you three times that in time and energy. They're demanding, they don't implement, and they blame you for results they didn't create the conditions for. You spend hours managing their expectations and the revenue looks good until you calculate the actual value of your time.
Three right-fit clients pay you X amount and take half the time. They implement what they learn, they get results and then they refer other right-fit clients. The revenue is the same or higher, and the energy is completely different.
One great client is worth ten mediocre ones.
And read that again, your best clients refer other people like them to you . When you work with the right people and deliver amazing results, they tell others in their network who are similar. You build a flywheel of increasingly good-fit clients.
When you shift your marketing and messaging towards a specific audience and use clear and specific messaging, it resonates so deeply with those people that they feel you’re speaking directly to them. And that’s the whole goal of small business marketing.
Your authority then builds faster and you’re able to go deep in a specific area instead of spreading yourself thin across everything. You become genuinely expert in serving your ideal client because you're focused on it.
Your sales become easier, your referrals improve, the quality of your leads increases, and your business becomes more efficient.
Trying to speak to everyone and then trying to serve everyone isn’t creating a better business, it’s creating noise, overwhelm, and missed opportunities. Being specific is strategic and it’s how you build a business that actually works for you and your clients.
